Zilvinas Kempinas was born in Lithuania in 1969 and has been living and working in New York since completing his MFA in 2002. The artist’s unique installations often use unspooled videotape and electric fans to conjure transfixing visual conundrums such as ‘Flying Tape’ (2004), which levitated a room-size loop of video tape on the air currents from a circle of fans; and ‘White Noise’ (2007), which recreated a monumental kinetic screen of ‘white noise’ on the gallery wall. Since having his first one-person exhibition at Spencer Brownstone Gallery in 2004, the artist has had two further solo shows with us in 2006 and 2007 and enjoyed an ever-growing international reputation. His entire 2006 show was purchased for the Margulies Collection, Miami, and he has had recent solo museum exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo, Paris and the Contemporary Art Center, Vilnius. In 2007, the artist was highlighted by Art Review Magazine as one of its 'Future Greats: 25 Artists You Need to Know', and received the Calder Prize and Atelier Calder Residency Award. In 2008, the artist will be showing at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and, in 2009, having a solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle, Vienna. |
